5Great for My NeedsAug 22, 2008
By Hemevubal
I bought a Zojirushi 1L carafe and was very happy with it. Then read in the instructions that there was an option to put a Manual Drip Filter Cone that could be used to make coffee directly into the carafe. I checked it out on Amazon but saw a lot of criticisms that gave me pause. But slowly I started checking them out one by one and found them either to be wrong or irrelevant. The most important criticisms that I saw was that the thing dripped too slowly and was structurally unbalanced.

One reviewer made the claim that their Melitta One cup cone had 4 holes and thus drained coffee quickly. I also own a Melitta one cup drip cone and found that (despite claims to the contrary) there is only one hole in that device and that did not prevent the Melitta one cup from making coffee in less 30 seconds

There was also a claim that Melitta's 10 cup Cone/Carafe would be better as it would be faster than this Manual Drip Coffee Cone. But I checked out the Melitta at a local Ace Hardware and again it only has one hole. Plus the thing is so wide it would be useless for the purpose of making coffee directly into my Zojirushi carafe.

So seeing how these two criticisms were factually inaccurate I bit the bullet and bought the cone and just received it two days ago. On initial inspection, I can see how someone could say it seems structurally unstable. But this thing has a small hollow cylinder jutting out from the bottom of the cone (not shown in in the picture) through which coffee drains (like a typical funnel). And when you insert this cylinder into the narrow neck of a carafe or thermos it is absolutely rock solid. On my Zojirushi, it is as if they were made for each other. If you needed to use this make coffee for a cup or mug then you probably are better off with the Melitta one cup cone.

I ground my beans extra fine for cone filters and it took 3 minutes to make 1L of great coffee. I don't know that may be way too long for some people (as others did not post times I can't say) but it's perfectly fine for me. So at least for me the claim of being too slow was just not true.

I can't wait until the weekend. I usually percolate a pot of coffee and read the paper and some books to pass away the morning before exercising and doing household chores.
====================
It's been over half a year since I bought the cone and have nothing but good experiences with it. I like it so much I bought another so I could make a pot of coffee at work. I have noticed that with extremely fine ground coffee (where the grounds turn to mud in the filter), the drainage is slower but you can try stirring the grounds as it drains, putting in the filter at a 90 degree angle to keep the filter from sticking against the sides of cone. I've never had a persitant problem of slow drainage. In any case, every day I use this cone to make a litre of coffee. It takes me less than 10 minutes to grind the beans, make the coffee, cleanup and walk back to my desk where all my coworkers fight amongst themselves as to who gets to drink my coffee a litre goes pretty fast when you've got five people drinking it.

I don't claim that everyone will have this experience but as I said for someone who just wants a cup of coffee in the morning and some to share with friends, this has been a wonderful purchase.

5Works great -- important how-to-use detailApr 02, 2009

Every coffee making device in my house broke recently -- the glass on the french press, the electric percolator, etc. I decided to buy this cone holder for a thermos carafe I have that has a flip-up lid. I wasnt sure if this would work, but it does, and the lid is not in the way. It's a close call, but it does fit. I'm pleased with the way it drips, I dont find it too slow. The unit also is bigger than I envisioned. Right now I'm using up a pack of Bunn filters that arent even meant for this type of filter holder, but I can make do. After this, I'll get the tallest cone filters, and that should make this whole arrangement Sweet! This was kind of expensive with the expedited shipping, over $17, but I am glad to have it, coffee tastes great, and I think it will work well with another carafe I had forgotten I had. It's a sturdy item, too -- should last indefinitely.

UPDATE SIX MONTHS LATER: The reason some people had trouble with this isnt because of the one hole, it's because the paper filter sticks to the walls of the plastic cone after water is poured in, thus creating a vacuum seal. If you gently tug on the edge of the paper filter and release that seal, the coffee flows Very Fast out the one hole. The best way to use this product is with #6 cone filters because you can fill the cone with hot water all the way to the brim. #4's also work, but if you get the #6's, you'll be glad you did. I finally bought a case of them through one of the Amazon vendors, and the results are just great. No slow dripping, perfect coffee every morning. After I discovered the technique of tugging the paper filter slightly, that made this product work like a charm. So don't contemplate drilling any extra holes -- the one hole is enough. I love it this set-up. (PS -- You could use one of the gold mesh filters, and probably have no problem with slow dripping because no seal can be formed due to the rigid frame of that style filter.)

5Great for CampingSep 17, 2007
By Michael D. Almer
This is a wonderful product and perfect for camping. Low energy use (just boil water), fast (the reviewer who thought otherwise probably ground her coffee too finely), compact, simple to use and clean. The filter extension that fits into the throat of the container is a very stable design and the coffee stays warm for hours in any standard thermos or carafe. I've owned one for years and never leave home for the desert or mountains without it. Two thumbs up!

4Read this for dimensions of the stub that fits into your carafeFeb 08, 2009
By Tom D.
You can't see it in the photos, but this cone has a hollow cylindrical 'extension' that sticks off the bottom of the cone and fits into the mouth of your thermos or carafe. The extension is 1 3/16" in diameter (and 1 1/2" long). The flat flange at the base of the cone that stops it from falling through is 2 5/8" wide. So you can probably use this on any thermos/carafe with a mouth between 1 1/4" and 2". It works perfectly with my Zojirushi Thermal 1-Liter Carafe. The product is made of a transparent brown polycarbonate, and is rigid and durable.

Having just made the switch from daily use of the equivalent Melitta cone, I can confirm that the RSVP cone drains more slowly (using the same Melitta filter papers, and coffee ground to the same fineness). Both cones have a single small drain hole, but the Melitta cone comes to a finer point at the bottom, and has higher plastic ridges that keep the filter paper from sticking flat to the plastic. These seem to enhance drainage, especially for the last part of the brew.

Another reviewer notes that you can try to compensate for this by grinding your coffee more coarsely, but I think Melitta already has it just right--I like to use a fairly fine grind, and then trust that the quick brewing will help me avoid overextraction. A coarser grind also means you need to use more coffee for the same strength brew. I think I'm just going to drill a couple extra holes in mine (as one other reviewer did). If only they had copied Melitta a little more closely, they'd get 5* from me.

UPDATE (Jan, 2012) After 3 years, this product is still holding up great to daily use. I never did drill the extra holes--instead I got a burr grinder and the more even grind seems to give me reasonable brewing times.

5works fine as isFeb 11, 2009
By Kelly G. Wilson
This filter cone works just fine exactly as it is--suggestions that it needs extra holes drilled are wrong imo. If your coffee is going through too fast, your beans are ground too coarse, if too slow, or the brew is stalling out, the beans are too fine. The former will under-extract the coffee and it will suck, the latter will over-extract and that will suck too. If you are using a whirly blade grinder, well, you could have both problems, over and under extraction because they cannot produce an even grind. Get a good burr grinder. Anyhow, the filter works perfectly for brewing directly into a thermos which is why I bought it. I had to tinker with my Rocky burr grinder to get a grind level that produced the right extraction rate, but am completely satisfied with it now. And, it is prettier than my old brown plastic mellitta filter.
