5Just right for kitchen.Feb 06, 2010
By DP Cooke "Dandi"
We have had this for about 4 months now to collect our veg and eggshell garbage to feed a worm farm to make good growing dirt since we live in very sandy ground area. It gets emptied when it gets full (about every 5 days). No odors, no flies, and with the biodegradable liners and the charcoal filters it's very easy to keep clean.

I do wish it were a bit larger because sometimes it doesn't get emptied when it's full and we have to spill garbage over into a plastic container until the worm farm is ready to accept more garbage. So I'm ordering another one. I have no complaints of it being too heavy or too light, the handle has plastic protection so as not to scratch/bruise the stoneware. I have had other RSVP products and they were all excellent quality, so now I'm torn between another black stoneware pail or the RSVP stainless steel pail which is a bit larger. Which ever I choose I expect to be pleased.

5Great crock to take kitchen scrapsDec 12, 2010
By Janie
The pot is very attractive and matches the black appliances we have in the kitchen. It is small enough to sit on the counter top and it doesn't look like a little trash can as many of these little pots do. I read other reviews of other kitchen compost pails and it was mentioned the were just fruit fly generators. This one is not. No flies, no odors (even when filled with onions or garlic). It is an excellent product and I would buy it again and certainly recommend it to anyone wanting a smaller, attractive crock with excellent filters and an excellent seal.

This is great to have in the kitchen. I would recommend to anybody. Makes a great gife for those who compost. Go a head and order the compost bags while your at it, they are handy. I have had it for a year now and it still has the original filters and you can not smell it.... until you open it...

4Good kitchen compost--beware of handle!!Jan 03, 2012

We juice a lot of fruits, and eat a lot of fruits and veggies in our house, so we end up with a lot of pulp/scraps. Composting is something we wanted to start doing, and this seemed like a good way to slowly start it.

This pail came with 2 biodegradable bags (easier cleanup of the pail) and a little chart on what you can and cannot compost, and is preloaded with the filters.

It took us about a week to fill it the first time, and there was never any odor that came from the pail.

The only negative I have to mention is the handle--it is not securely attached. This was opened at Christmas, and when I picked it up from the floor (carpeted) to put into the kitchen, the handle immediately came apart from the pail, and the pail dropped. Thankfully this happened low to the ground and on carpet--I don't know if the pail itself would have shattered if I had done this when removing it from the counter to dump into the yard.

5Solved a couple problemsOct 20, 2011

Previously, our "compost bucket" was an old plastic container. This had a couple of problems. First, the lid never quite sealed. This caused a bit of an unpleasant aroma, but even worse seemed to create a captive breeding program for fruit flies. Second, you could never really get the container clean-it was always discolored and looked unsightly and unsanitary.

This pail solved both of those problems. The lid is heavy enough that it stays on and is tight enough that the fruit flies can't get out. There even seems to be quite a few less flies-not quite sure why that would be, but I'll take it. The porcelain/ceramic also comes clean with just a little soap and water-although I suspect it is dishwasher safe. There is a charcoal filter in the lid-which may or may not help with odors. I am fairly sure it will get changed every 20 years or so-whether it needs it or not.

We don't use the bags-just toss stuff right in the pail and empty it every couple of days. The pail is certainly heavier than the plastic container it replaces, but not really a problem. It actually keeps it from "walking" across the countertop where it lives. The black finish looks good in our kitchen, and the finish is smooth and well made. There are no signs of unfired ceramic peeking through the finish. The handle is strong and sturdy, and well attached.

Overall-quite happy with it. Wish I had bought it years ago.
